According to historian J.A. Bosher, Lieut.-Colonel A.C.P. Haggard, D.S.O. (1854–1923), an older brother of
the novelist Sir Henry Rider Haggard, settled about forty miles north of
Victoria in the Cowichan Valley, where Rider visited him in 1916.
