According to historian J.A. Bosher, Lieut.-Colonel A.C.P. Haggard, D.S.O. (1854-1923), an older brother of the novelist Sir Henry Rider Haggard, settled about forty miles north of Victoria in the Cowichan Valley, where Rider visited him in 1916.
