Seiji Hiroe authored and illustrated The Cowboy Fisherman (Self-published 2010), a story about his wife's grandfather who was a Japanese fisherman during the Great Depression. He originally wrote it as a family tale for his grandchildren, but soon saw its value as an important historical story for both Japanese and Canadian peoples—it is written in Japanese and English. Hiroe was nominated for the Christie Harris Illustrated Children's Literature Prize in 2011.
