Willow Dawson grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and then moved to Toronto, Ontario, where she attended Ontario College of Art and Design. She has illustrated for several publications, including YMCA Canada, Owl Magazine, Kids Can Press, Top Shelf Comics, Filmblanc, Shameless Magazine, Sumach Press, Kiss Machine, Strange Horizons, and Tightrope Books.

Willow Dawson wrote and illustrated Hyena in Petticoats: The Story of Suffragette Nellie McClung (Penguin, 2011), a graphic biography. McClung wrote 18 books and was a political activist and social reformer, especially in the area of women's rights. Hyena in Petticoats covers McClung's life from birth to death, including winning the vote for women, being one of the first female MLAs and winning the Person's Case with the Famous Five.
