Okanagan Valley resident, Julie Oakes, has a master's degree in art professions from NYU and a master's in social and political science from the New School for Social Research in New York.
In Hooks (Dundurn, 2012), Oakes grapples with the discrepancies between a Western and an Eastern take on prostitution. Oakes tells this story in two voices, one female (main character) and one male (her guide), each from vastly different personal circumstances and orientations. Hooks (Dundurn, 2012) contains 11 b&w illustrations.
