Sarah Simpson, while a reporter for the Cowichan Valley Citizen had her coverage of local issues such as the Island Grains project recognized in the Environmental Initiative and Community Service categories of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association's Better Newspapers Competition Awards and the British Columbia & Yukon Community Newspapers Association Ma Murray Awards.

This work led to the publication of her first book, Uprisings A Hands-On Guide to the Community Grain Revolution (New Society 2013), co-written with Cowichan Valley farmer Heather McLeod. To aid community self-sufficiency, their book describes ten community models to demonstrate how local grain production can be achieved, providing step-by-step instructions for small-scale production.
