Co-edited by David Beck and Thom Hess, Tellings from Our Elders, Volume 1 (UBC Press, 2014) is a book of traditional stories of the Coast Salish, transcribed from the Snohomish language of the Puget Sound basin.

Co-edited by David Beck and Thom Hess, Tellings from Our Elders, Volume 2 (UBC Press, 2015) is a compilation of nine stories written in the Skagit Valley dialects of Lushootseed. Originating from recordings of elders sharing the oral stories of the Indigenous people of the southern and eastern shores of the Puget Sound, Tellings from Our Elders “opens a doorway to cultural knowledge, specialized vocabulary, and patterns of narrative stylistics typical of Coast Salish storytelling.”

Thom Hess was born in Flint, Michigan in 1936. He earned his BA at the University of Colorado and his MA and PhD at the University of Washington. Hess was a professor of Linguistics at the University of Victoria from 1968-2000. He died on August 27, 2009.
