Born Doris Filmer-Bennett in Vancouver, Doris Gregory left her studies at UBC to join the Canadian Women’s Army Corps. Trained in Victoria, she served for most of the war in London before studying at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto. She publicized her independent clinical practice with a weekly newspaper column “Life Psycle.” Her memoir How I Won the War for the Allies (Ronsdale 2014) includes her recollections of travelling across the Atlantic at the height of the U-boat infestation, surviving the blitz in London's underground shelters, cycling in traffic-free southern England and slipping into forbidden, neutral Éire.
