Born in Cranbrook, Winnifred Ariel Weir went to Invermere to teach in 1929 and married in 1932. For 19 years she edited Invermere's local weekly The Valley Echo and she helped to establish the Windermere Valley Museum. She wrote and published Tales of the Windermere (W.A. Weir, 1980). She received the Order of British Columbia in 1999 and the Queen's Golden Jubilee medal in 2003. She died on February 3, 2004 at age 95.
