A native of New Westminster, Alan Woodland published New Westminster: The Early Years, 1858-1898 when he was chief librarian for the New Westminster Public Library. The 1973 book contains 118 photos dating back to when the 'Royal City' was the capital of the Crown Colony of British Columbia. It was released by defunct Nunaga Publishing of New Westminster. Woodland later compiled Eminent Guests; a record of notable visits to New Westminster, with contemporary accounts selected from local newspapers to give flavour of the times.
