Speck is a member of the Namgis First Nation of the Kwakwaka'wakw tribal confederacy. He is also the head chief and spiritual leader of the Gixsam Clan of the Kwagul tribe, as well as the story-keeper for his mother and fathers' families.

Speck provides cross-cultural training to the Department of National Defense, as well as Corrections Canada. He is the Director of Aboriginal Learning and Development for the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
