Cim MacDonald was born in Ardrossan, Scotland in 1944. She came to Canada in 1953, eventually attaining Canadian citizenship. She has been the curator of the Chemainus Festival of Murals Society since 1996. She has personally painted five murals for the society and restored ten others. She is a signature member of the Northwest Watercolor Society and an Associate member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She has a fellowship with the Canadian Association for Photographic Art, and is a signature member of the Professional Photographers of Canada.

In April 2015 she joined the Portland Audubon Society on a birding and wildlife trip to Brazil. As the trip progressed she discovered her inner birder. On looking at bird shots she had taken on other trips, entered in competitions and won awards for, she decided to enter The Unexpected Birder (Chemainus Bay Publishing $19.95) in the Photographic Society of America's 2015 book competition. It received an honourable mention. The book contains pictures of local and exotic birds with lighthearted captions.
