Early 1970s Newfoundland is a place on the cusp of change in Ruddock's Night Ambulance (Breakwater 2016), where characters must decide between societal expectations and the right to choose their own fates. A secret and illegal abortion in St. John's leads to complications for Rowena Savoury, where she finds herself being questioned in a hospital by a young constable who is uncertain of how to proceed. Night Ambulance explores the effect of Rowena's decision on an entire cast of characters.

Nicholas Ruddock has been shortlisted for the Toronto Book Award for The Parabolist (Doubleday 2010), and in 2016 he was a finalist for the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Prize (UK). He lives in Guelph, Ontario.
