Marilyn R. Wilson was born in Canandaigua, New York, in 1955. She lived in Mitchell, South Dakota from 1958 - 1969, then the family moved to California where she stayed through her mid-twenties, completing a BA in Psychology and part of a MA in Counseling. Not happy with the direction the field was taking, she walked away from her Masters and moved north to Seattle, Washington. It was while living in Seattle she met her future husband, a Canadian who would lure her north to Vancouver, British Columbia. She moved to Vancouver in 1984 and has lived here ever since, raising three children - now adults.

In 2006, she answered a Craigslist ad for magazine submissions from a New York fashion magazine and two were accepted. Over the next decade she co-owned/edited a local fashion magazine, was editor for another and also wrote freelance articles for submission. Her specialty was interviewing interesting people on their unique journeys and sharing these stories through articles - over 150 published up to 2017.

When the magazine she helped to run folded in 2012, Wilson decided to pursue writing her first book, Life Outside the Box, based on ten favourite interviews. A second edition was released in 2016 when she launched her own imprint called Real People - Real Lives Press.
