Many photographs of native cowboys. Chunky Woodward’s maternal grandfather, Charles E. Wynn Johnson, a close friend of Frank Ward, had purchased Alkali Lake Ranch in the Cariboo in 1908. Over the next 30years he built it up to a 3,000-head operation, and Chunky had been visiting the ranch since he was three. Memories of happy childhood holidays spent riding where moved Chunky Woodward to try to purchase his grandfather’s old ranch from Mario von Riedemann, the son of an immigrant Swiss who had bought it near the end of the depression. Woodward found that the charming spread set on the benchlands above the great Fraser River was not for sale. $750.00
