Ornithologist, filmmaker and adjunct professor at SFU, Robert Butler's The Great Blue Heron (UBC 1997) is considered a definitive study. With a foreword by Robert Bateman, Butler's The Great Blue Heron (UBC 1997) shares the biologist's experiences following great blue heron colonies. Drawing on a decade of research, Butler exmaines how rapid urbanization in B.C. Lower Mainland threatens heron habitat.

In 2000, he combined knowledge as a park naturalist, wildlife biologist and adjunct SFU professor of biological sciences to produce The Jade Coast: The Ecology of the North Pacific Ocean (Key Porter 2000), a primer on basic concepts in ecology. 1-55263-513-9

In 2020, Butler co-authored Pacific Flyway: Waterbird  migrations from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego (Sasquatch/Penguin 2020).
