During the Depression, Cariboo-raised Earl Baity escaped to the woods, surviving off his gold panning, trapping and hunting skills in order to support his family. After he returned to the city he left again to live in the woods. Wilderness Welfare (Mitchell Press, 1966) is his 'epic of frontier life' in the Cariboo.
