As a University of Victoria instructor, she wrote Zarathustra's Sisters: Women's Autobiography and the Shaping of Cultural History (University of Toronto Press, 2002). It is an examination of the lives of six women whose intellectual and artistic pursuits were often overshadowed by the men with whom they were associated. The women are Nadezhda Mandel'shtam, Romola Nijinksy, Simone de Beauvoir, Lou Andreas-Salome, Asja Lacis and Maitreyi Devi.
