One of the earliest, but not the first, of the titles from the femininist collective Press Gang Publishers was a children's book The Day The Fairies Went On Strike (1981) by Linda Briskin and Maureen FitzGerald, illustrated by Barbara Eidlitz. A girl Hester convinces all the fairies to join a picket line.
