According to biologist and photographer J. Duane Sept of Sechelt, mycologists believe there may be as many as 10,000 species of fungi living in the Pacific Northwest and up to 1.5 million species worldwide. Also a writer and environmental consultant, he has published in periodicals such as BBC Wildlife, Canadian Wildlife, Nature Canada and Outdoor Canada, and he has worked for Parks Canada and the World Wildlife Fund. He is the author of The Beachcomber's Guide to Seashore Life in the Pacific Northwest (Harbour 1999) and The Beachcomber's Guide to Seashore Life of California (Harbour 2002) as well as his own self-published series from his own Calypso Publishing imprint.
In Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Northwest (Calypso Publishing/Sandhill $14.95) Sept creates a guidebook to edible and medicinal wild plants found in the region. Generations of Indigenous people have passed down a wealth of lore relating to the nourishing, healing properties of native species. Sept explores how some deadly cancers, like bowel and ovarian, may be treated with the extracts found in medicinal plants. Included in Sept’s guide are trees, shrubs, wildflowers, aquatic plants, horsetails, ferns and poisonous plants, with lists of therapeutic uses and a medicinal glossary.
