Living on the Queen Charlottes Islands for over 30 years has enabled Carey to explore the area extensively. Traveling in a converted lifeboat, he and his wife Betty (Lowman) Carey have seen almost every beach, bay and logging road. His book, A Guide to the Queen Charlotte Islands (Raincoast, 1998), shares his knowledge of the islands also known as Haida Gwaii. It's an updated version of A Guide to the Queen Charlotte Islands (Edmonds, Washington: Alaska Northwest Publishing Company, 1975). Carey wrote Puffin Cove (Hancock, 1982; 1989), a children's book set in the Queen Charlotte Islands, and edited his wife's memoir.
