Born on May 25, 1937 in Peking to Canadian parents, his family brought him to Vancouver for six months in 1939 before moving to Detroit. Evenden returned to B.C. in 1966 where he was active within Simon Fraser University. Having taught at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia State University in Atlanta and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, he is a visiting scholar at the University of Edinburgh and the British Association for Canadian Studies. He has co-edited five books concerned geography.
