Russian born silversmith Boris C. Peetz arrived in Victoria in 1911 and started making his handmade wood and brass fishing reels in the early twenties. By 1935 the B.C. Peetz Manufacturing Company had fishing reels and swivels as its main line of business. In his book Peetz, The Reel for All Time (Heritage 1997 $12.95), Doug Pollard tells the story of the 70-year-old company whose name is synonymous with fishing on the West Coast. Pollard received his Ph.D in botany fromthe University of Wales in Aberystwth and immigrated to Canada to become Senior Policy Advisor, Environment for Forestry Canada. He has been a leading authority on climate change within his field of expertise and published more than 75 scientific papers. An avid fisherman, he celebrated his retirement in 1966 by catching a 262 lb. halibut off Langara Island. Pollard is a member and past-president of the Haig-Brown Fly Fishing Association.
