Once a thriving transportation centre on the Skeena, Port Essington, or 'Spokeshute' as the the Tsimshians knew the site, was destroyed by two fires in the 1960s. Born in Port Essington in 1908, E.A. Harris grew up with a father who wrote a journal of events on the Nass River starting in 1890 and a mother who kept a Port Essington journal from 1905. E.A. Harris has recalled and illustrated the history of Port Essington in Spokeshute: Skeena River Memory (Orca, 1990).
