Elizabeth Hawkins (b. 1942) chronicles the tale of Jack Mound's enduring search for and reputed discovery of the location of B.C.'s Lost Creek gold mine, ever since he was first taken into the mountains by his father to search for the mine at age 16. In her book Jack Mound and the Curse of Gold (Hancock, 1993) Hawkins says that moments before Slumach the Indian was hanged for murder, he placed a curse on his gold mine, and in the years to follow an estimated 55 people died or disappeared in their efforts to locate the treasure in the mine. One day Hawkins met Mound deep in conversation with her husband, publisher David Hancock, about a book proposal. She ended up writing the story.
