Born in Sweden in 1849, John William Arctander was a lawyer who published a partisan account of William Duncan's missionary work among the Tsimshian and his disputes with church authorities called The Apostle of Alaska: The Story of William Duncan of Metlakahtla (New York: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1909). Because Arctander referred to the Tsimshian as savages, William Duncan bought the copyright and had all unsold copies destroyed. Arctander died in 1920.
