Rick Ouston was born in Vancouver in 1955. He cites Allan Fotheringham's maxim "News isn't news unless someone else doesn't want it told" to introduce Getting the Goods: Information in B.C., his reporter's guide to finding people and information in B.C. Ouston is a high school drop-out who has learned first hand the importance of being able to undertake investigative techniques as a Vancouver Sun journalist. An adoptee who traced his own lineage, Ouston documented the search for his birth mother and an older sister in Finding Family (1994).
