Michael Poole was born in 1936. He studied journalism in Virginia and worked as a reporter for the Vancouver Sun. Poole is better-known as a filmmaker who wrote and directed Island of Whales for the PBS series Nova. Early in his career he also made an excellent documentary about the "logger poet" Peter Trower around the time when Trower quit logging.

For two months in 1987, Poole canoed the Inside Passage and later produced a memoir in 1991, Ragged Islands: A Journey by Canoe Through the Inside Passage, which was nominated for the Hubert Evans B.C. Book Prize.

He later produced a book about marijuana, Romancing Mary Jane: A Year in the Life of a Failed Marijuana Grower (1998), and a first novel, Rain by Morning (Harbour, 2006). See review below.

Poole lived in North Vancouver before moving to the Sunshine Coast where he died suddenly on July 13, 2010.
