Carol Popp of Victoria gathered oral testimonies from members of the Fishermen's Reserve to write The Gumboot Navy, a history of the fishermen and boats that were recruited to patrol the West Coast from 1939 to 1944. She was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1937, came to Canada in 1961 and has also lived in Ladysmith, Franklin River, Terrace and Nanaimo.
