As a 16-year-old Saltspring Island poet, Nadine Shelly received the first literary Art and Protege Award from Morley Callaghan in 1990. Born in Port Moresby, New Guinea in 1973, Shelly came to Canada in 1975 and grew up in La Ronge, Saskatchewan. Shelly has had her first collection of poems, Barebacked with Rain, published by Exile Editions, an Ontario press run by Morley Callaghan's son, Barry Callaghan.
