Having lived all his life in the Cariboo, Bill Hong self-published a memoir prior to his death in 1985. He was born in the mining town of Stanley, deserted by the 1950s. His father had emigrated from China, first to the United States, then came to Stanley in 1880. One of five children, Bill Hong was an ardent amateur historian and collector of memorabilia. He had general stores in Stanley, Barkerville and Wells.
