As an German figher pilot, Eckehart J. Priebe was shot down over England and detained for five years in various prisoner-of-war camps in Canada. "Jokingly I have often said that the one mistake I did not make was, though involuntarily and unknowingly, to be a Prisoner of War on the wrong side. I am convinced that nowhere in the world did Prisoners of War have better housing, better food, better recreation facilities, better educational opportunities, and above all, fairer treatment than in Canada." He later became a travel agent and Canadian manager of Lufthansa airline. His ardently pro-Canadian views are contained in his self-published memoir, Thank You Canada: From Messerschmitt Pilot to Canadian Citizen (West Vancouver: Condor Publishing, 1990).
