Hydrographic marine consultant Tom McCulloch of Victoria was born in Greenock, Scotland in 1925. He went to sea at 16 during World War II as a Cadet with the Henderson Line of Glasgow. He was promoted to deck officer in 1944 and joined Cable & Wireless in 1946. He immigrated to Canada with his wife in 1948. He served on deep sea and Great Lakes vessels until 1953 when he joined the Hydrographic Service in Victoria. He was appointed Regional Director, CHS Central Region in 1968 and Director General Bayfield Laboratory of Marine Services in 1978. He retired in 1985. He self-published a memoir from his childhood to emigration called Mandalay to Norseman: Childhood on the River Clyde And Service At Sea 1925-1948 (2003) followed by Navigator to Hydrographer (2005) that encompasses his hydrographic work from 1948 to 1979.
