Born in Vancouver in 1947, St. John Simmons also spent time as a child at a small cattle operation outside Kamloops. He studied at the Torrey College of Geology in Utah before becoming editor of Prism International at UBC, where he studied Creative Writing. As a poet he has published Wilderness Images and Driving the Angels Out (Pulp Press, 1987)
