In his retirement, California historian H.R. Wagner studied early Spanish navigation north of Mexico. He hoped "to publish a translation of some original journal of every important expedition by sea to that coast, which had not yet seen its way into print." He began in 1923 with journals published in the California Historical Quarterly. These were gathered for his book in 1929.
