Born in 1953, Joan Vance holds a degree in biology and two law degrees. She has been a lawyer with the British Columbia Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Vancouver. Much of her work is connected with the use, allocation and regulation of natural resources. The Western Canada Wilderness Committee, under Paul George, has released numerous forest ecology titles such as Joan E. Vance's Tree Planning: A Guide to Public Involvement in Forest Stewardship (1990) from the B.C. Public Interest Advocacy Centre.
