Shigeru Llewellyn was born of a Welsh father and Japanese mother in the tiny coal-mining town of Llandgruby. He attended rugby games as a member of the choir, considered too small to play. Awarded a scholarship to study philosophy and linguistics at the University of Okaido, he began to play rugby and continued to do so into his retirement. He self-published an amusing guide entitled The Game of Rugby Football As Played By Elderly Gentlemen (North Vancouver: Next Century Communications, 1989).
