As a founding member of the West Coast Whale Research Foundation, Jim Darling has travelled around the world studying whales and began conducting research into gray whales and humpbacks in the north Pacific in the early 1970s. Having received his Master's from the University of Victoria in 1977, he received his doctorate from the University of California in 1983 for his studies of Hawaiin humbpback whales. His book is Wild Whales: Humpback, Gray & Killer Whales (Summerwild Productions, 1987).
