In his memoir In and Of: Memoirs of a Mystic Journey, Haas provides a description of the bar of the Ivanhoe Hotel, a Main Street Mecca for decades in Vancouver. Haas has lived at times in the Ivanhoe Hotel, in a little squatter's shack he built himself in Vancouver's North Shore mountains, and in estates in BC and abroad. Outside of the city he has been a wilderness explorer, moving up and down the coast of British Columbia and Alaska, working occasionally as a sea-kayak guide, caretaker, and biological assistant. He has also spent much time overseas in such places as India, Iceland, Israel, the Big Island of Hawaii, and New Zealand. Jack Haas' books arise out of his own experiences and the wonder he has found "from the profundity of being human."
