Born and raised in Vancouver, she attended UBC (B.A. English and History; Ph.D. Psychology) and Memorial University of Newfoundland (Hons.B.A. and M.Sc., Psychology). A lifelong political activist, she was President, B.C. Nuclear Disarmament Campaign and was elected as a Vancouver school board trustee for two terms. For many years she operated a private Psychology practice. She is married to Ross Johnson, a political scientist, and she has five children.
