As president of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association he edited Liberties (New Star. 1989), a compendium of 17 selections on major civil liberties issues. It contains a foreword by Robert Rowan, a former UBC philosophy professor who created the Arts One program at UBC and is generally considered the founding spirit of the organization. "The BCCLA is not a radical body," Rowan writes. "We are not cop-haters or cop-baiters. We are a conservative body. We want to conserve our heritage of freedom. We believe in ordered liberty." The BCCLA was founded in 1962 and remains the oldest active civil liberties association in Canada. Editor John Russell was first associated with the organization in 1979.
