Born in Vancouver in 1960, Valerie Lupini wrote a teenage novel about racism in which a new Chinese Canadian neighbour becomes a factor in the life of a teenage activist in There Goes the Neighborhood (Red Deer College Press, 1995). It was followed by The Whistle (Red Deer Press, 2005, $12.95), a work of juvenile fiction in which a girl is transported into the dark secrets of her family's pioneering past by the sounds of her great-grandfather's dog whistle.
