"Did you ever see a Christian take land from another Christian and sell it, not letting him know anything about it?" -- Clah, a Tsimshian, 1883

Including letters and journals from early converts to Christianity among the Tsimshians on B.C.'s north coast, Susan Neylan examines the nature of Tsimshian religious ideas both before and after the arrival of missionaries in The Heavens Are Changing: Nineteenth Century Protestant Missions and Tsimshian Christianity (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2003). She claims, "the concept of 'sin' was a revolutionary idea, with no apparent parallels in 'traditional' Tsimshian culture."
