As an SFU psychologist, Bruce Alexander argued in Peaceful Measures: Canada's Way Out of the 'War on Drugs' (U. of Toronto, 1990) that the Americans' war on drugs is not only a phoney war; it is a cruel and costly failure that is a gross distraction from greater social problems facing North American society.
"By adopting peaceful measures," he wrote "in place of war measures, drug-related problems can be approached with both greater humanity and better prospects for success." He began investigating drug issues in 1971 as a comparative psychologist. "I had no academic training that related to any pressing social issues, so I chose drugs as a topic because it dominated the headlines in the Trudeau/Nixon era."
Bruce Alexander later co-authored A History of Psychology in Western Civilization (Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 2014) with Curtis P. Shelton.
