The Perfect Mile (Thomas Allen, 2004) by New Yorker Neal Bascomb recalls the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games race at Vancouver's Empire Stadium between English medical student Roger Bannister and Australian John Landy when Landy looked over his shoulder and Bannister famously ran past him to victory in 3:59.4. When the famous event was hyped around the world 50 years ago as 'The Mile of the Century', neither man earned a penny. Film rights have been sold to the makers of the movie Seabiscuit.
