A former biologist for the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Otto Langer became an outspokent DFO critic and a director of the Marine Conservation Project for the David Suzuki Foundation. He is the co-author of A Stain Upon The Sea: West Coast Salmon Farming (Harbour, 2004), winner of the 2005 Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize. "Above all," Langer said, accepting the award, "I'd like to thank my ex-employers because without their incompetence this book would not have been possible. And I would like to thank the fish farms and the multi-national corporations because without their greed this book would not have been possible."
