Susan Marsden wrote Defending the Mouth of the Skeena River: Perspectives on Tsimshian Tlingit Relations (2000) in 1995 and presented it at the 29th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Archaeological Association in Halifax in 1996 as one of several papers in a session marking the 30th anniversary of the North Coast Prehistory Project initiated by George MacDonald. Based on Tsimshian oral records, her her paper was prepared to obviate the theory maintained by some anthropologists that the Tlingit occupied the mouth of the Skeena River until the “proto-contact period.”
