Initially encouraged by Dara Culhane, University of Alberta English professor Christopher Bracken traced and analysed the governmental and legalistic correspondence and reports that were required to ban the potlatch ceremonies in British Columbia "constructing fictions about First Nations and then deploying those fictions against them"; in The Potlach Papers: A Colonial Case History (University of Chicago Press, 1997).
