In London, Captain Horton Rhys wagered 500 pounds with some companions that he could earn at last that same amount above his expenses in one year on the stage in a foreign country. North America was selected. The Travels, Tribulations and several Encounters of an English Officer and Amateur Thespian through the uncivilized lands of Canada and the United States were duly recorded and published in 1861 in London as A Theatrical Trip for a Wager! The Alcuin Society of Vancouver reprinted this work in 1966 in a limited edition of 500 copies, introduced by Robertson Davies with original pen and ink drawings by Sam Black.
