At age 85, Bill Riley hired a young journalism student, Laura Leake (who became Mrs. Erick Stringer of Prince George) to help him write his Cariboo memoirs as a member of the British Columbia Police Force from 1920 to 1924, before the Provincial Police were provided with uniforms. Mainly his police work consisted in helping those in need. An excellent excerpt, entitled "Rookie Cop at Soda Creek," appears in Heart of the Cariboo-Chilcotin: Stories Worth Keeping (Heritage 2006), edited by Diana Wilson.
