Born in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1946, Don Austin evoked a 'contemporary comic Hell' with his fabulist stories in The Portable City (Vancouver: Arsenal Editions, 1983) and The Lost Tribe (Pulp Press, 1985). 'A comic Borges', he has worked part-time for many years at the Vancouver Post Office. He once said he began writing when he was ten or eleven by supplying new lyrics to Johnny Horton's popular song "The Battle of New Orleans."
